Which dry skin remedies do you choose for your annual winter skin?

Winter is around the corner and the usual problem of healing dry cracked skin recurs and sends us off to the supermarket or pharmacy to choose amongst hundreds of brands, the right one for our skin problem. We conscientiously read the labels, heed the warnings of any side effects, worry about allergies, and eventually settle for one that we hope does what the label promises.
We use the product and are pleased when our skin feels better during the first hour or so of applying the lotion or cream that we chose. We wash our hands and have to reapply the dry skin remedy or our hands soon begin to feel like sandpaper. Several times during the day and especially before we go to bed, we go through the same ritual to prevent that dry, cracked and sometimes even bleeding skin.
The next day we go through the same process and as winter progresses it seems to get worse. Did we choose the wrong product for our skin? Is the product no good? Do we have an allergy or have we got the beginnings of eczema or worse? These questions run around in our heads and only add to the confusion without giving us either a dry skin solution or a satisfactory answer to our queries.
The fact that the preparation that we used is washed off or wears off and has to be continually reapplied should give us a clue. It is a very short-term solution, and it doesn't penetrate deep enough to give us any long-term remedy. We don't really know enough to make an informed decision.
