Shielding lotions provide protection against Halloween disguise irritants

10/23/2005

Whether adult or child, haunting faces of monsters, ghosts, goblins and other wild creatures are sure to darken the doors of many a candy-bearing residences and private parties this Halloween, and shielding lotions are an excellent way to prevent dry skin conditions caused by irritants found in many commercial masks, and make up kits associated with the costuming ritual.

Whether your disguise is a do-it-yourself endeavor, or part of a commercial mask or make up kit, many people experience sensitivity to the ingredients contained in the make up or to the plastics, dyes and latex found in commercially produced costumes.

Shielding lotions used before applying Halloween makeup, or in advance of donning those daring facial facades, can provide some measure of protection against possible irritants or chemicals contained in commercial makeup kits and costumes.

Steps to help you have a more comfortable haunting include:
· Look at the ingredients: Knowing what ingredients are in your make up kit is a good place to start. Read the labels. Know your own sensitivities. If you are allergic to dyes or specific ingredients or preservatives, avoid purchasing makeup kits containing these and instead look for quality hypoallergenic labels and ingredients.
· Check expiration dates: Many discount stores will stock surplus makeup kits and costumes from past years, which can lead to makeup kits with deteriorating ingredients or expired preservatives.
· Inspect costume integrity: Some latex, plastic and rubber content used in manufacturing commercial costumes could experience some dry-rotting if stored for long periods of time which may shed on the wearer creating sensitivities.
· Avoid mildewed costumes: Costumes stored annually in damp or humid areas where exposure to the elements or extreme temperature conditions can cause mildew and other fungal or bacterial growth that can make partygoers ill. Wash costumes thoroughly and use good judgment. It may be time to throw out that old mildewed costume and replace it with a newer model.
· Stay Hydrated: Costumes can sometimes be stuffy and hot if the weather hasn’t yet cooled down for the season. Using shielding lotion to retain skin’s moisture and drinking plenty of fluids can help trick-or-treaters stay healthy. Even if temperatures are cooler, taking these precautions can make for a more enjoyable event.

Halloween is a time for fun and celebration. Taking care to protect your skin from the possible harmful effects of chemicals and irritants with a shielding lotion can ensure you enjoy your fright-night escapades to the fullest.
